I was attempting to upgrade from Windows server Foundation to Windows Standard without having to wipe and reinstall. Is there an in-place upgrade path for these editions, and if there is, is there any documentation on it? The only one I could find pointed to an upgrade from Essentials to Standard, but didn't explicitly mention that that was the only possible upgrade.

This question is similar in requirement and error to In-place upgrade from Windows Server Standard to Enterprise or Datacenter but varies significantly by the Version and Edition. I know this is an old post, but I was recently confronted with needing to upgrade a Windows Server R2 Foundation to Standard in order to add the Hyper V role to the server so it could take over for an existing Hyper V server with failing hardware.

I want to preface this by saying this is in no means meant to get around licensing I have a volume license agreement for Windows Server and is definitely not supported, but given that I had no other option, I wanted to post the solution.

By changing the values that were in there for Foundation to these, I was able to immediately no reboot needed launch the Server R2 Standard setup and it proceeded to perform an in-place upgrade that worked flawlessly.

Improve this question. Community Bot 1. If you have no patience for Microsoft then maybe you shouldn't use their products. I get pretty tired of hearing people bash Microsoft when the failure is clearly not theirs, but yours. In your case it was your failure to find the information, not Microsoft's failure to provide the information.

So MS bashing isn't my thing! Fact 2: Another person less keen on finding MS bashers would have realised that the comment means that I had spent too much time with MS support being passed from dept to dept with no one knowing an answer. Surely they had to know. Fact 3: Yes I did do a lot of patient searching but maybe down the wrong path to not have found the answer so readily.

Fact 4: Server had this upgrade path, hence the desperation to find one for I also hope your fury didn't stem from the fact that you assumed I was a newbie to StackExchange, as I am not and am well aware of the culture here. Add a comment. Sorted by: Reset to default.

Ryan Ries Ryan Ries Thanks Ryan - Although I was desperately hoping that there did exist an in-place upgrade path. Even if there is a "hack" it would be unsupported, and SF is about systems administration in a professional setting. Good luck! Ryan Ries This ideally true, but in a real world you have to deal with all sorts of issues, including outdated stuff.

To perform the upgrade.Windows server 2012 r2 foundation upgrade free

This was to take over the Hyper V server role for a system with failing hardware in a building that was locked down due to COVID, so any solution I was to implement needed to be done remotely with no site visit. There are numerous locked questions on Spiceworks stating that this cannot be done.

Here's how I did it. So I was recently confronted with needing to upgrade a Windows Server R2 Foundation to Standard in order to add the Hyper V role to the server so it could take over for an existing Hyper V server with failing hardware. I want to preface this by saying this is in no means meant to get around licensing I have a volume license agreement for Windows Server and is definitely not supported, but given that I had no other option, I wanted to post the solution.

There are numerous questions on Spiceworks already that ask this, and all of them come back that it is not supported, so I wanted to put out the solution that I used.

When you go to install an upgrade, the supported upgrade paths are checked in 2 registry Values located in the following key -. By changing the values that were in there for Foundation to these, I was able to immediately no reboot needed launch the Server R2 Standard setup and it proceeded to perform an in-place upgrade that worked flawlessly. I had already checked that virtualization was enabled in the bios, so once the install finished, I was able to log in, add the Hyper V role, and migrate the VM to this server and shut down the failing server.

Disclaimer: This is a completely unsupported hack. It may or may not fully work, and you may or may not run into future issues by doing so.

Also you made no mention about replacing the license which would also be required to be legal. It worked and it saved me a lot of work and money needed for complex software reinstallation. I upgraded from Server Foundation to Server Standard. In response to spicehead-aoyjp with the help of google translate - There is no "Migration" it is an in-place upgrade you are performing. No different than if you are upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows You Launch setup.

Buying a whole new set of servers is NOT an option. Since you have two and assuming the hardware is supported for server check here and with /8991.txt to confirm. You could move the fsmo roles to other server then rebuild them one at a time. I'd check that the domain functional level is or greater.
